Study mind map template
Use this template to turn one chapter, lecture sequence, or essay question into a map you can actually review. It is designed to separate what you know, what proves it, how ideas connect, and what still needs attention.
Copy this structure into your map
Center: topic, chapter, or essay question
- Main themes: the major sections or concepts
- Key terms: definitions in your own words
- Evidence and examples: dates, quotations, formulas, cases, worked examples
- Comparisons and connections: cause/effect, similarities, contrasts, dependencies
- Likely questions: prompts you may need to answer
- Recall: what you can explain without notes
- Review: gaps, uncertainty, and the next source to revisit
How to build the map
Make the first pass from notes or a reading. Use short labels rather than copying paragraphs. Then close the source and add a second pass from memory. The difference between the two passes matters: a branch you can read is not necessarily a branch you can explain. Mark the gaps visibly so your next review session has a specific purpose.
Example: planning an essay
Place the essay question in the center. Create branches for a provisional answer, three supporting claims, evidence for each claim, counterarguments, and a conclusion. Under each evidence branch, add the source or example and what it demonstrates. Move the branches until the argument has a logical order. The final outline should be a translation of the strongest path through the map, not a separate invention.
Use it for revision
Choose one main branch and explain it aloud. If you cannot explain it, add a question rather than more decoration. At the end of a session, add two possible exam questions and answer them from the map. Review thin branches first on your next pass. This creates a living revision guide rather than a static summary.
Questions to ask
- Can I define each key term without looking?
- Does every claim have an example or evidence?
- Can I explain the connection between two neighboring branches?
- Which branch would be hardest to turn into an answer?
- What is the smallest next study action?
